Veterinary Dental Care in Memphis

Healthy Smiles for Happy Pets

Just like humans, pets need clean teeth and healthy gums to maintain their overall health. Because pets can’t brush their own teeth, they can often suffer from oral infections or other problems that go undetected for a long period of time. This can lead to bigger problems with your pet’s health, including damage to your pet’s kidney, heart, and liver. At Walnut Grove Animal Clinic, our team of professional veterinarians will help your pet tackle their oral health. We offer comprehensive veterinary dental care in Memphis, from oral exams to dental cleanings. When your pet needs their teeth treated with care, look no further than Walnut Grove Animal Clinic!

The Importance of Healthy Teeth & Gums for Pets

While it is easy to ignore or simply forget, dental disease is the leading illness among cats and dog. Even the most attentive pet parents may fail to notice that their pet is struggling with dental disease, alternatively called periodontal disease.

Keep an eye out for these signs and symptoms of periodontal disease in your pets:

  • Bad breath
  • Yellowish-brown crust of plaque on the teeth near the gum line
  • Red and swollen gums
  • Pain or bleeding when your pet eats
  • Decreased appetite or difficulty eating
  • Loose or missing teeth

The symptoms included in the list above can be a strong indication that dental disease is plaguing your pet. If you notice any of these symptoms – particularly if you notice a change in your pet’s eating or drinking habits – give our team a call as soon as you notice. With earlier treatment, periodontal disease is extremely treatable.

Like in humans, periodontal disease in pets is caused by an excessive build up of plaque on your pets’ teeth. We can brush our teeth to loosen plaque, but pets are not able to do this on their own. This results in the plaque forming a film on the teeth which hardens when the bacteria dies, creating more surface area on which more plaque will build. As more and more plaque builds up on your pet’s teeth, it can begin to move below the gum line, which can lead to infections and, if left untreated, permanent damage to your pet’s mouth and jaw.

Fortunately, our veterinary team is here to help. We are pleased to offer a full suite of dental services to ensure that your pet’s smile is as healthy as it can be. A dental cleaning involves anesthesia and care in our surgical suite so that we can properly remove all the plaque from your pet’s teeth. We will also help you learn tips and tricks to keeping your pet’s smile healthy at home. Your pet’s oral health is our priority.
